Summary
The renowned Malayalam author Vaikom Mohammed Basheer wrote a wonderful story titled "The Snake and the Mirror." It tells the tale of a doctor who leads a solitary life. He had just begun his medical career, and his income was meager. He was therefore unable to reside in a home that was cozy. The house had a lot of rats and was not electrified. His dream and goals, however, ran counter to this. He had a deep appreciation for beauty and thought he could become handsome. He married a slim woman who was in good shape. He considered getting married to a wealthy, well-off woman with a successful medical career. She ought to be overweight so that she can't catch him when he makes a mistake in life. He discusses the discrepancy between his wife's appearance in his dream and how it actually was. His sense of style is really admirable. He makes revolutionary decisions like maintaining a good smile on his face, shaving every day, maintaining a thin moustache, etc. because he thinks he is handsome and wants to appear even more handsome. After dinner, he heard a sound coming from the roof while he was sitting in the chair. It seemed to him to be a typical sound. After some time he was shocked to see that a cobra slithered on his shoulder and coiled around his arm. He arm grew weak and lifeless. He confronted death head-on. It snuck into the table from the mirror. Running outside, he arrived at his friend's home. He told his friend about the terrible incident. He believed himself to be a lousy, foolish, and stupid doctor. He smiled feebly at himself. When he reached at his house from friend, most of his valuable belongings were stolen leaving back his only dirty vest.
