Cronin had worked as a mine medical inspector and as a Harley Street doctor, so he was familiar with both situations.

Kerala SSLC English 10th Standard The Best Investment I Ever Made Summary
Dr. AJ Cronin was leaving New York and heading back. He noticed that one of his travelling buddies was closely observing him on the second day. He first ignored him since he wanted to sleep and steer clear of any uncomfortable shipboard interactions. Dr. Cronin caught the man's desire to approach him but hesitation right away. Dr. Cronin noticed the man was staring at him carefully again the next morning. He was joined by a woman this time, most likely his wife. The steward of Dr. Cronin identified them as Mr. and Mrs. John-S, who were from a London neighbourhood. On the last day of the vacation, the guy made contact with Dr. Cronin at his wife's urging.
On the last day of the trip, with encouragement from his wife, the guy went up to Dr. Cronin and introduced himself. I-le offered Dr. Cronin his business card and enquired as to whether the doctor knew who it was. The man said, "I've been doing social work for fifteen years, and my wife and I went to New York to learn more about philanthropic work." The man still perplexed Dr. Cronin. Then, whatever he said to Dr. Cronin caused the mist of obscurity to part. Dr. Cronin's thoughts immediately went back twenty-five years. He remembered something horrific that had happened 25 years before.
He was once led to a suicide case in London while he was a young doctor there by a police sergeant. A young man tried suicide at a neighbouring lodge by inhaling cooking gas. With the help of the police sergeant and the inn's landlady, Dr. Cronin was finally able to bring the young man back to life after an hour of trying. After regaining his health, the young guy related his tale to them. He went by the name of John, and his uncle had taken him in as an orphan. Soon, he surrounded himself with undesirable people and indulged in life's pleasures like a young fool. I le gambled, took out enormous loans, put up all of his things as collateral, and even stole money from his office. I had finally decided what I wanted after losing everything. Le had nothing left and finally made the decision to end his life because he was worried about facing legal consequences for the act. The trio—Dr. AJ Cronin, the sergeant, and the landlady—decided to help him have a fresh start in life after hearing his terrible story.
The sergeant decided not to report the young guy to the police for a criminal offence. The landlady gave him a free month's worth of lodging. In order to protect him from legal action, Dr. AJ Cronin gave him seven pounds and ten shillings to store in his office. Dr. Cronin recognised the man and recalled their first meeting. Now a successful social worker, the young man. Dr. Cronin realised that his modest investment had been profitable. Dr. Cronin realised that, despite the fact that it had not generated any financial return, his tiny investment had turned out to be the finest one he had ever made.
