Recent discussions among scholars have questioned whether Kerala retained its matriarchal past until he early decades of the twentieth century. According to these studies, patriarchy triumphed in Kerala during the twentieth century, based on evidence from property ownership and domestic violence trends. This essay presents a critical discussion of this recent scholarship as it attempts to understand how and why patriarchy emerged in Kerala. The essay reveals that current scholarship has overlooked important aspects of women''s property ownership in Kerala, which make it difficult to support claims of an emerging patriarchy in the firsthalf of the twentieth century. The essay also shows that married women''s contributions to their families'' wealth make it unlikely that they suffered from domestic violence.
One of the most prominent features in the evolution of Kerala society during the twentieth century is that it came to be increasingly oriented towards urban life. The process of urbanization brought with it numerous changes in the cultural life of Kerala society, mainly because as soon as people moved to them they were exposed to a large number of unfamiliar factors.
