Before Jawahar Lal Nehru, English prose was not a powerful genre of Indo-Anglican literature. There was hardly any standard prose in existence. It was Nehru who enhanced the popularity of English prose by writing some popular books. His writings are marked with a unique style. It is lucid, spontaneous and suggestive. It has poetic richness. Nehru was a great journalist. He was always in favour of the freedom of press. He always stood in favour of a free and fearless press. He condemned yellow journalism. Though Nehru worked as a journalist for a long time, his prose became very sublime and penetrating. Even his extempore remarks are worthy of attention . At the same time Nehru was a great orator. He always spoke in a cultured tone. In this context he is compared with Churchill.One such book is The Discovery of India. This novel, written in a prison cell, is a troubled but determined mind's search of his past. It is an admittance of one's country's flaws, but not with helplessness or self-pity, but with a sense of duty, optimism, and action.
Summary
In his book "The Discovery of India," Jawaharlal Nehru discusses Gandhiji's timely entry into Indian politics. He emphasises Gandhi's active leadership. Gandhiji, he says, was a ray of light that dispelled the gloom. As a result, Nehru correctly assesses Gandhiji.
People expected calm, relief, and progress after the First World War ended. It did, however, usher in oppressive governance and martial law. People were ashamed by the situation. A large number of people lost their jobs. People were completely perplexed. They were stumped as to how to lift India out of poverty and misery.

When Gandhiji became the people's leader, fear vanished to a considerable extent. Fearlessness came after truth. It seemed as if there was a psychological shift. There was also a psychological response. People were embarrassed to be under foreign control. In the opinion of the people, it became necessary to abolish foreign rule.
Gandhiji inspired millions of Indians to varying degrees. Diverse people had different reactions to the incident. Some folks were willing to accept the shift. Others were not ready for a complete transformation. Gandhiji arrived at this time with a two-pronged strategy. The first was to question and resist foreign domination, while the second was to combat our societal ills. At the time, the Congress's primary goal was to achieve political liberty.
Several people were willing to give up their titles as a result of Gandhiji's influence. The British titles were not respected. With Gandhiji's strong leadership, new principles and a new way of life were established. Many people adopted simpler lifestyles and wore plain clothing.
Gandhiji had his own visions of a free India. He dispatched volunteers to help rehabilitate Indian communities. These messengers assisted the Indians in breaking through their shells. He wanted India to be a place free of caste structures and social disparities. Untouchability, intoxicating drinks, and drugs would not exist in an ideal India, according to him.
Gandhiji, according to Nehru, was extremely proud of his Hindu heritage. He attempted to give Hinduism a global appearance that incorporated all religions. According to Gandhiji, Indian culture is a blend of all. Gandhiji drew the common people of India to him like a magnet. He served as a bridge between the past and the present.He served as a bridge between the past and the future. Even his opponents were affected by his psychological revolution
