This chapter is based on a Fijian myth. It tells of the sacred sea turtles of Kadavu and the ritual performed by the maidens of Namuana village to bring them to the forefront of the harbour. The legend goes back to the story of a mother and daughter who were turned into sea gods to save them from the cruel heroes of a neighbouring village.
The Fijian legend of the sacred tortoises of Kadavu reminds us that we always appreciate the precious gifts we receive. In fact, this myth tells us how important it is to keep those gifts safe and secure.

Chapter 3: The Sacred Turtles of Kadavu
Summary
Kadavu is an island that is part of the Republic of Fiji Islands. There is a village called Namuana about 50 km from Kadavu. It is located near the Government Station in Vunisea Harbor. In a village called Namuana, there is a rare custom that is still practiced by women in the Namuana village. The custom is that the maidens of the city sing a “strange song” that will lift the tortoises into the sea. But if there is another villager named Nabukelevu, tortoises will not come.
There is a reason why the girls of Namuana village practice the custom of calling the tortoise. Legend has it that once there was a princess who attracted Tinaicoboga who was the wife of the Chief of Namuana. They had a daughter named Raudalice. They used to go fishing in the water. During a fishing trip, the Nabukelevu fishermen arrived there with a "large warship". Seeing Tinaicoboga and Raudalice, the fishermen jumped into a boat and abducted the women, although they repeatedly pleaded with them not to harm them. But the fishermen did not listen to them.
But the “gods of the sea” heard their pleas. They created a storm that destroyed the boat. In the presence of fishermen, women turned into tortoises to protect their lives. But the men took them and threw them into the sea. So Tinaicoboga and Raudalice escaped from these cruel fishermen. The sea became calm again. The fishermen retreated. The two women, who turned into tortoises, lived in the sea for the rest of their lives. It is believed that the offspring of these tortoises often arrived when the Namuana virgins sang an unusual song telling them to wear a mourning garment and to have a sacred band "painted" on each woman's hand. To ask Raudalice and Tinaicoboga, they summon them and ask them to come over to the sea.
