Chapter 3 Going Out for a Walk
Author
Maximilian Beerbohm
Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm, better known by his pen name Max, was an English essayist, parodist, and caricaturist. He rose to prominence as a dandy and a humourist in the 1890s. He was the Saturday Review's drama critic from 1898 until 1910, when he moved to Rapallo, Italy.
Summary
Walking is typically regarded as a healthy and beneficial activity. However, Max Beerbohm adopts a different approach in his essay. He draws the readers' attention to a significant disadvantage of walking for the sake of walking. He starts the essay by stating that he has never taken a walk. He was taken for walks. Nobody forces you to go for a walk in London. When you live in the country, however, it's difficult to say no when a friend invites you for a stroll.
The author's objection to walking for the sake of walking is that it slows down the brain. The author here is challenging the widely held assumption that walking is helpful for the brain. When a person with the ability to instruct and entertain goes for a walk, he loses these characteristics. Instead of making intellectual comments within the room, he suddenly begins complimenting the buddy and his relatives, and begins reading aloud anything he sees on both sides. He can even read traffic signs and landmarks.
The author provides a funny explanation for the cause. He claims that when one decides to go for a walk, his head and soul battle it out. The brain wants a purpose to go out, but the soul just has self-gratification to provide. The brain puts this tomfoolery on hold and goes to sleep. It only wakes up when the person returns to the room.
Beerbohm claims that he is not completely opposed to exercise. It is beneficial to one's health when consumed in moderation. But, in principle, he opposes walking for the sake of walking.
